Summer is the perfect time for beach trips, relaxing in the pool and, if one is resident of Grand Theft Auto 5’s Los Santos, launching a heist from a personal yacht. Fans will get to do that and more when Grand Theft Auto Online’s free Los Santos Summer Special update releases August 11.
The update adds several new ways for players to cause mayhem, including new missions, a fleet of new vehicles, and Open Wheel Races. Players who own a Galaxy Super Yacht will get to engage in a series of missions, either solo or with up to three accomplices. Rockstar has yet to reveal further details on these missions, but confirmed that they will feature “Everything from deep-sea diving to high-speed hijinks on the high seas.”
Until now, yachts in Grand Theft Auto Online have been little more than a flashy symbol of a player’s wealth, but the new update will add a lot more to the feature, as it looks like yachts will be the new headquarters for launching Los Santos Summer Special missions. Fans who want to engage in the new missions should start saving money now, as the luxury boats cost an upwards of $6 million in-game.
And that isn’t the only reason to start saving. More than a dozen new summer-themed vehicles will be available for purchase, including off-roaders and tunable sports cars. Fans of Open Wheel Races have something else to be excited about, as the update features a pair of new Open Wheel cars and a series of new Open World Races. Creative players will also have the chance to design their own Open Wheel circuits with the new Open Wheel Race Creator.
Aside from high seas hijinks and an armada of new vehicles, the update adds new Business Battles that will be expanded to “surprising locations for serious rewards.” The Diamond Casino and Resort will also see new “adversary modes on the premises.”
Grand Theft Auto Online has been a massive success for Rockstar, in both its amount of players and high sales, since it launched in 2013. A major part of the game’s success is due to Rockstar’s frequent updates that add new content like locations, vehicles and missions. Besides the upcoming Los Santos Summer Special, Rockstar recently added a massive update to Red Dead Online, which so far has received a mixed reaction from fans.
The Los Santos Summer special will be playable on all platforms, and won’t be the last big Grand Theft Auto update of the year. Rockstar hinted that the game’s next update will be its “biggest ever.” Some are already speculating that it may include the entire Liberty City map and reintroduce Grand Theft Auto 4’s Niko Bellic.
Grand Theft Auto Online is available on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, and will be available on PS5 and Xbox Series X in 2021.
