The very first game Sony showed during its PS5 games showcase event was none other than Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto 5. Grand Theft Auto 5 is the most profitable entertainment product of all time, and so it’s not all that surprising that Rockstar is bringing it over to the next-generation consoles. And as it so happens, Grand Theft Auto 5’s transition to next-gen consoles will apparently include a big enhancement for the Grand Theft Auto Online multiplayer mode.

Various retailers have started posting Grand Theft Auto 5 PS5 pre-order pages online, potentially leaking some information about the game. According to the listings, the Grand Theft Auto 5 PS5 port will retail at full price, but it will also be upping the number of players in Grand Theft Auto Online. If the retail leaks are to be believed, then Grand Theft Auto Online will support up to 64 players in a single game on PS5 and Xbox Series X, which is double what is currently available.

Of course, it’s possible that the retail listings for Grand Theft Auto 5 are incorrect, and so fans should keep that in mind. At this point, there is very little we know about Rockstar’s plans for Grand Theft Auto 5 when it comes to the next-gen release.

One thing we do know is that Grand Theft Auto 5’s GTA Online component will actually be available as a standalone release. A timed-exclusive for PS5, the GTA Online standalone release will also be made available for free to PlayStation Plus subscribers when it launches in 2021. An exact release date for GTA Online on PS5 has not been revealed just yet, but we do know that it will be available before the next-gen version of the single-player campaign.

Rockstar’s decision to bring GTA Online and Grand Theft Auto 5 to next-gen consoles has gotten a mixed reception so far. Many fans have expressed disappointment that Rockstar has yet to reveal its next new release, as it’s been nearly two years since Red Dead Redemption 2 launched. Rumors have pointed to Rockstar’s next game being Grand Theft Auto 6 or even a Bully sequel, but until Rockstar itself decides to share more information, all fans can do is speculate.

Grand Theft Auto 5 is available now for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions also in development.
