10 The Oak Fence
The Oak Fence is an area that quickly scares off new players as it is infested with spider nests. If you’re a brave soul who sees a good opportunity, then you’ll quickly realize it is an optimal location for a base.
One could argue other locations offer similar benefits and way fewer risks, but what’s life without a little adventure? Building a base on the Oak Fence is best for the type of player who wants access to rarer loot at the cost of being surrounded by danger on all fronts.
9 Patio
When building a base it often helps if a location already has natural walls that help form most of the structure. This allows you as the player to build on it and focus more on safety and structure than worrying about building the entire thing from scratch.
The shaded patio area at the southern part of the map provides this setup and has multiple cubbies for multiplayer possibilities as well. Its location is near both mushrooms and dandelions, of which the former can be an excellent source of in-game sustenance and the latter is an invaluable material for building walls and frames.
8 The Bird Bath
Grounded is a game focused on shifting the player’s perspective and seeing things from a different angle. The Bird Bath is a location that offers access to water and berries, but can also provide a viewpoint in which you can survey your surroundings quite effectively.
It is located in the southeast section of the map, right before you enter the brush of the Hedge. For those looking to build a castle-like structure, the Bird Bath’s base serves as a great foundation for a high-fantasy tower.
7 Flat Large Stone
One of the hardest parts about building a solid and sustainable base in Grounded is simply finding a way in which the geography of the land isn’t an issue. There is a large group of stones located in the northwest of the map, and upon ascending them you’ll find a large flat stone to build upon.
This amount of flat space can’t be found anywhere else on the map, but comes at the tradeoff of being a distance away from the main research facility. Due to it being above the ground, though, you’ll have zero worries about insects invading your space.
6 The Reliable Baseball
One of the first major landmarks you’ll discover, the Baseball provides a very large, flat (sort of) surface for building on. During the early game, some of your biggest worries will be insect attacks from swarms of ants, especially if you accidentally anger them by killing too many of their own. Building on top of the Baseball offers the advantage of height.
There are plenty of resources nearby, including one of the large juice boxes for a reliable source of water droplets in the early game. It’s also close to the first Field Station, ideal for analyzing items at the beginning of the game. Because the Baseball only has one access route, the large stem that leads up to it, it’s quite easy to get to but also suitable for defending against insect attacks. Ants won’t be rummaging around in your food supplies, either.
5 Close To The Oak Tree
Just to the side of the Oak Tree there is a wooden fence that provides a safe platform to build on. You’re close to Burgl, where you’ll get your quests from, and you’ll find both a can and a juice box for plenty of water in the early game.
The Oak Tree is covered in spiders and stink bugs, so you might want to reconsider this as a beginner base-building spot. Stink bugs, in particular, are dangerous to fresh spawns because of their poisonous attack. It’s located right in the middle of the map though, so you are in a good spot to explore all of the worthwhile locations in the garden.
4 Around The Pond
There are several spots located around the pond that are suitable for large bases. The smooth, flat rocks provide an excellent foundation for a sprawling stem megabase, but you want to make sure you choose the right spot.
Different areas around the pond have different insects. To the west you’re more likely to come across spiders and beetles, whereas to the very northwest, on the edge of the map, you can encounter mosquitos that will attack you on sight. It’s a better idea to stick close to the center of the pond, near the Oak Tree. There are fewer aggressive insects and you still have the benefit of being to able access all the new water resources recently added to the game.
3 In The Hedge
The Hedge has seen a lot of love during the recent updates, and all the new creatures to see and resources to collect make a hedge-base a pretty good idea. Be careful, though, there are various creatures here that will be a pain to deal with, including larvae and spiders.
Your best bet is to climb into the hedge via the various sticks and twigs that lead up its huge trunks. An elevated base is safe from the creatures that roam below, looks pretty awesome (like some sort of Elven city), and still gives you access to some of the new stuff things to see and do.
Be wary of venturing too far into the Hedge, though. Right along the hedge’s twisting branches, you may eventually encounter the Broodmother’s lair. It’s buried deep in the Hedge so it shouldn’t be a problem, so just be aware that there is an enormous spider’s lair somewhere in there.
2 South Of The Mysterious Machine
Probably one of the most highly recommended spots to build is just to the south of the Mysterious Machine. There’s a large raised area surrounded by a rocky cliff that is ideal for a starter base, or for a large base that will last you into the mid-game.
Centrally located, not far from the spawn point, and safe from the majority of aggressive creatures on the map, this area has everything you need to survive, including a nearby juice box. All you need to do is clear out the various grass stems (slice them from the bottom so that they don’t regrow) and you’ll have plenty of room to build. There are a few different platform areas that are suitable for a base.
