Rockstar Games will shutting down the online components of its two most popular games, Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2, as a response to the ongoing protests in the US.

In a tweet earlier today, Rockstar Games announced that the servers for both Grand Theft Auto Online and Red Dead Online will be going down for two hours, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. ET. This is being done to “honor the legacy of George Floyd”, whose death sparked protests against police violence.

A follow-up tweet by the publisher links to a list of organizations that “defend civil rights, protect legal rights, and promote tolerance and understanding among racial, ethnic, and cultural groups”, urging others to support them and honor “the many victims of America’s racial injustices”.

This downtime for both games coincides with the start of the George Floyd memorial service that is taking place in Minneapolis today at 2 p.m. ET.

Many companies have been showing their support for protesters and the Black Lives Matter movement. D&D are donating half of its proceeds from the digital dice sets over the next week to BLM, while Square Enix is offering up a sizeable $250k donation for the movement.
