Guerilla Games has finally released a patch for the PC version of Horizon Zero Dawn, but it doesn’t quite fix everything that’s wrong with this troubled port.
By now, reports of Horizon Zero Dawn’s problematic PC port have likely made the rounds in the PC gaming community. Issues like bad frame rate, slowdowns, stuttering, and all-around poor performance on certain PC hardware configs are giving the game a bad name on Steam. Currently, Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition is sitting at 62% on Steam user reviews, with most complaining about at least some form of technical issue.
Guerilla Games is listening. They responded to complaints last week to let players know they’re looking into all these issues and are compiling a list. Now they’ve released their first patch to address at least some of those issues.
“Our team has been working on a patch that addresses several issues with Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition for PC,” wrote Guerilla Games on Reddit, “which is available to download now.”
Patch 1.01 doesn’t quite address everything that’s wrong with the game (or even half of what’s wrong), but it does at least lay the framework for future patches.
The biggest addition in Patch 1.01 is a new diagnostic tool that will help the developer track down all these pesky bugs that are causing so much mayhem for so many computer users.
The big complaints, such as slowdowns, 4K graphics not displaying properly, and anisotropic filtering not working at all are still not quite fixed, but they should be in the coming weeks thanks to this new diagnostic tool.
What did get fixed are the quick hits. Some users reported crashing on startup thanks to SteamUI not initializing properly, so that’s been fixed in patch 1.01. Some users also reported the game being unable to save if the Steam profile had a special character in it, so that’s been fixed too.
Also, some video corruption errors that made things super weird like the video below have also been fixed.
Although patch 1.01 doesn’t even fix half of what’s wrong with the game, users are largely happy with Guerilla Games communication and the steps taken that will eventually get Horizon Zero Dawn to where it needs to be. Expect another patch to arrive next week with even more fixes thanks to the diagnostic data that the devs are collecting.
