Most card games have you build a deck that essentially plays out the actions of whatever heroes you have on your time. That’s the same formula that has served so many card games both before and after Slay the Spire.
Guild Of Dungeoneering is different. Rather than just control your hero (or “dungeoneer,” in the parlance of the game), you also control the dungeon itself, laying out tiles using cards from your deck. You’ll also leave loot for your dungeoneer to find along with monsters for your dungeoneer to slay which will lead to more loot and more cards.
Each dungeoneer comes with its own deck for battle, whereas the player’s deck is more about controlling the dungeon. You can also upgrade your Guild to gain access to more cards, hire better dungeoneers, and listen to a fairly entertaining bard.
Throw in a truly unique art style that looks like a grade school cartography project, and you got yourself a true indie gem.
Guild of Dungeoneering originally released way back in 2015 and has since gained two expansions that add new items, heroes, and quests. Pirate’s Cove added pirate-themed dungeoneers, while Ice Cream Headaches sends players on a quest to save the Ice Cream Monks who are under attack from the evil Brainiacs. Now, almost six years later, Guild of Dungeoneering is getting an ultimate compilation that adds even more zany content.
Guild of Dungeoneering Ultimate Edition combines both previous DLC while also adding new hero classes, new items, new monsters, new weapons, new quests, and a whole lot more. A brand new Dungeoneer customizer will let you pick the look of your guild employees, while the trailer promises an upgrade path for your level 1 Chumps (to either Super Chump or Ultra Chump).
Developer Gambrinous didn’t provide a specific date, but expect Guild of Dungeoneering Ultimate Edition to arrive later this year.
