Guitar Hero II for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 2 features a glitch which replaces every song in the game with “Trogdor” by Strong Bad, which - while hilarious - is actually incredibly useful.

Trogdor the Burninator, the one-armed S-shaped dragon made his first appearance in “Strong Bad Email #58” on Homestar Runner in early 2003, quickly becoming on of the most prominent figures in the history of the website. In 2006, an extended version of the Trogdor song was created and included in Guitar Hero II, which featured a newly added guitar solo battle between Squeedly and Meedly (spoiler: Squeedly wins). More importantly, however, it brought us the most unreal glitch in rhythm gaming: The Infinite Trogdor Glitch.

By performing a particular set of steps in Practice Mode, detailed below, the game will replace all songs in the game with Trogdor. They will still be listed with their regular names, but when selected, you will not be faced with Lynyrd Skynyrd or Avenged Sevenfold. You will be faced with the Burninator. Players will play the opening verse to the song on medium difficulty, before notes disappear entirely and the song plays through to the end. Once over, you will be credited with earning 100% on whichever song you selected from the list. This is the easiest way to earn the achievement/trophy for getting five stars on every song on expert difficulty, but also the quickest, as “Trogdor” is the shortest song in the game.

Purchase And Play Trogdor In Practice Mode

You will of course need to have “Trogdor” purchased. Simply play through the game until you have earned $550 to purchase the track. Load up the song in Practice Mode. Choose to play lead guitar, on medium difficulty with the slowest speed. You are going to want to select just the “VERSE 1!” section (the second section listed under “Full Song”) and begin playing it.

Unplug Your Guitar

You do not have to hit any notes. Simply let the section play out. After the last note of the section, you’re going to want to count five fret bars on the scrolling fret board. Immediately after the fifth fret bar passes the strum zone (roughly halfway between the fifth and sixth fret bars after the last note), unplug your guitar. The intent here is to unplug the guitar at the same time the results screen would typically appear. Your screen should look like this:

Plug It Back In And Make Sure The Fretboard Is Scrolling

Plug the guitar back in and press “Resume”. If the unplug was timed correctly, the fretboard should continue to scroll infinitely. If the results appear, that means you unplugged too early, so simply hit “Restart” and try again. Once you see the infinitely scrolling fretboard, pause the game and hit “Quit.”

Play Any Song

By this point, the glitch is actually complete. Load up any song of your choice in career or quick play, on any difficulty. “Trogdor” will being playing, though only Verse 1 will have notes, and it will be on medium. Hit 100% of those notes, let the song play out and you will be credited with 100% and 5 gold stars on whichever track you chose. This can be done to easily and quickly 5-star every song in the game, or just any track that you are getting frustrated with, such as “Jordan” or “Freebird”.

Notice how the player earned “100% Note Hit” but only got a 64 note streak, as that is the number of notes in Verse 1 of “Trogdor”. It is worth noting that this glitch will actually work with any section of the song on any difficulty. Unfortunately, earning five stars requires you to have an average multiplier of 2.8x or higher through the full song. If you choose just the “TROGDOR!” section on easy difficulty, there will not be enough notes to get you this multiplier, and you will earn only three gold stars on songs using the glitch.
