The beloved arcade fighter that put Gundam fans in the cockpit of their favorite suits is now on PS4 as Mobile Suit Gundam Extreme VS. Maxi Boost ON. The console port can’t quite capture the immersion of piloting a giant robot, but it is still a frantic 2v2 fighter with a massive roster. It’s a real treat for mobile suit lovers of all eras, but the huge selection of fighters can also be intimidating. Before a player can even put together a decent combo, they might even struggle with how to block.

How To Block In Gundam Extreme VS. Maxi Boost ON

It might seem silly for this guide to even exist, but the fact is that the game doesn’t give you a simple block button. The process isn’t even listed in the Command List for mobile suits either. So to make it clear, here’s how to block in Gundam Extreme VS. Maxi Boost ON: hit down on the D-pad or left joystick, then quickly hit up. Hold the up position to extend the block’s duration.

Be warned that blocking consumes boost. It also only blocks frontal strikes, so be sure to take the foe’s attack head-on.

Other Techniques

The Gundam Extreme Fandom page describes some other techniques players can use to up their movement game.

A Boost Dash is just what the name says, you use your suit’s boost to take off in a desired direction. The Boost Dash can be used in the middle of another animation to cancel out of it. This allowed a player to make a quick retreat, or extend an attack chain by triggering a new move after the Boost Dash. Many beam rifles can be shot more frequently when Boost Dash Cancel is used in the middle of a shot.

Another variant of this is the Rainbow Step Cancel. To do this, double tap the D-Pad or Analog stick in the middle of a melee attack animation. You should see a rainbow aura come from your mobile suit if this is done correctly. Again, this can be used to extend a melee chain or quickly sidestep an opponent counterattack.

Finally, there are some mobile suits that can shift between modes. To activate this transformation, hold X and double press a direction on the D-pad or joystick, and be sure to hold that second press.

Follow these tips, and you’ll be an ace pilot in no time! Or at least you’ll know how to perform a basic block.
