In a surprise move, Games Workshop has released the core rules for the upcoming 9th edition of their tabletop wargame Warhammer 40,000. This follows the release date announcement yesterday. The update posted on the Warhammer Community website also features details of two new kits that will accompany the release.
This certainly is an unprecedented move, but not surprising given some of the leaks and rumor circulating at the moment. GW has made the right decision by bringing forward the digital download of the core rules. It gives gamers old and new a chance to start playing and testing out new strategies, using an official source.
As mentioned above, two new kits will be available soon. For Space Marines, we have the Hammerfall Bunker, a fortified installation with massive destructive potential. Deployed from orbit, the powerhouse deploys swiftly to assist our fearless heroes in their hour of need. Adorned with the Hammerfall missile launcher on the top, it is able to launch long-range attacks of Superfrag or Superkrak missiles. Other weapon options include side armaments, a choice between Heavy Bolters or Heavy Flamers, that provides all-round protection against close-range combatants.
Not to be left out, The Necrons also see a new addition to their ranks in the form of the Convergence of dominion. Three obelisks known as Starstele, provide defensive might to Necron forces. Heavily fortified they provide additional bonuses to nearby Necron troops and when operated by a Cryptek they are able to transport friendly units to different parts of the battlefield. It’s not clear whether this could be used against their enemies, but as they are known as transdimensional abductors, don’t be surprised if your units are ripped from this reality to goodness knows where!
The new kits look amazing and have configurable options that you can use to make these your own. A firm release date hasn’t been given, but our best guess will be a release either on the same day, or the week after the launch box set hits the shelves. That’s July 25 and August 1 for those of you too lazy to do the math! For now, you can download a free copy of the new 40K rules from the Warhammer Community website.
