If the VR requirement for Half-Life: Alyx is what was putting you off from trying it, it seems your patience has paid off. Thanks to the work of some intrepid modders, gamers that don’t have the money to drop on a VR headset can fully complete Valve’s latest installment in the Half-Life series. It may be a little janky and not exactly smooth, but it’s still doable.

Progress on the mod started when players discovered console commands inside of Alyx that allowed for more conventional control schemes. Obviously done to test things during development, it was only a matter of time before modders got to work figuring out how to adapt the gesture-based commands to mouse and keyboard inputs.

The mod’s official GitHub page details the process of setting this up and even goes over a few segments that are tricky. Because input is limited to a flat plane, some puzzles and combat scenarios are far more difficult than they otherwise should be. Still, this mod does allow the game to be finished, so that’s something.

Even Valve, itself, said that it was a matter of “when” and not “if” when it came to modders removing the VR requirement. I didn’t expect it so soon after release, but this does make me more interested to give Alyx a try.
