Animal Crossing: New Horizons has shocked the world with its incredible sales, and Nintendo has revealed that half of those came from the digital version of the game.

It was revealed during Nintendo’s most recent financial report that Animal Crossing: New Horizons has sold 13.41 million copies around the world. Despite this, the game has yet to crack the top five best-selling Nintendo Switch games. It’s possible that Animal Crossing: New Horizons will make it next time, as those amazing sales numbers came from the first few weeks of the game’s release.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons has dominated the Nintendo eShop charts in Europe and North America, which isn’t that surprising. According to Switchsaku (translated by Nintendo Everything), Nintendo has revealed that roughly 50% of Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ sales were from the digital version of the game, which should account for around 6.7 million copies.

It’s not surprising that Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a popular digital download, considering that the game was released during the self-isolation period when most stores were closed and postal services were disrupted. It was probably easier for most people to purchase the game on the eShop than having to wait longer for a physical copy to arrive.
