There are bound to be many conflicting opinions regarding popular gaming franchises with devoted fan bases. Halo is no exception. The series has been around for 20 years, and with each new installment, more and more unpopular opinions about the sci-fi shooter series start to surface.
Reddit seems like a popular and safe space for Halo fans to voice their controversial thoughts – specifically r/Halo. From disliking fan-favorite characters to preferring modern games over the classics, here are some unpopular opinions about the Halo franchise!
10 Halo Is More Than The Master Chief
The Master Chief is the face of the Halo series and is a huge gaming mascot. As the main protagonist for one of gaming’s pivotal franchises, it is easy to recognize the Chief. Even those who haven’t played the games know the name of the armored super-soldier.
Some fans are sick of John-117 getting all the attention, though. Reddit user u/Noahed loves games like Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach as they focus on different characters other than the Master Chief, proving that “Halo doesn’t need Master Chief.”
9 Cortana Is Annoying
Cortana has been an integral character in the games and its universe since its first entry. She acts as the secondary protagonist alongside the Chief. The AI is almost as popular and loved as the Spartan!
However, some fans might have a problem with Cortana. u/LexaMaridia finds the character annoying. Don’t let the Cortana superfans know about this!
8 Halo 4 Is A Good Game
It was a sad day for Halo fans when Bungie announced Halo: Reach would be their last entry in the franchise. However, while Reach would’ve been a great send-off, Master Chief’s story would continue in 2012 when 343 Industries released Halo 4.
When another developer takes control over a big franchise like Halo, fans might be a bit skeptical. However, while Halo 4 received a lukewarm reception upon release, many players look back on it fondly now. Take u/Volatile, for example, who really enjoyed the game.
7 ODSTs Are Cooler Than Spartans
Spartans are pretty cool, eh? They are super-soldiers, can absorb many bullets, jump as high as 9 feet in the air, and have regenerative shields. Plus, the savior of the universe is a Spartan. What’s not to love?
Well, playing as a nearly invulnerable super-soldier can become stale. Thankfully, Bungie offered an alternative with the release of Halo 3: ODST. Fans got to experience what it was like to take on the Covenant invasion of Earth as an ODST and play around with their gadgets. And this made many players, like Reddit user u/TandBinc, prefer ODSTs to Spartans.
6 Halo CE’s Campaign Is Not Fun
Halo: Combat Evolved, the first Halo game, is often regarded as one of the best FPS games of all time, and it has cemented itself as one of the most innovative console shooters in gaming history. However, one aspect that made CE an iconic game was its legendary campaign. It featured memorable characters, an enthralling story, and amazing gameplay.
Many fans hold CE’s campaign in high regard for these reasons. But some fans, like u/TheLittleMona, don’t think it lives up to its reputation. In fact, the campaign bored this user!
5 Halo 5 Requires A Lot Of Skill
Many competitive Halo players will say skilled-based Halo games peaked with Halo 3. They’ll wear their 5-Star General rank like a badge of honor and complain how modern Halo games are too easy and require less skill than the classics.
But Reddit user Squelcher121 begs to differ. They say Halo 5 “has a much higher skill ceiling than any Bungie Halo game,” and “Being a superb Halo 5 arena player is much harder than being a superb Halo 3 player.” Who’s to say who is in the right here?
4 Sprint Is Great Like Just, Wow, So Good
The original Halo trilogy crafted the core identity of the rest of the series. Throughout the first three games, players only had one base movement speed. While other modern FPS games added sprint as a core mechanic, Halo refused to do it.
That is, until Halo: Reach. Bungie’s last Halo game incorporated sprinting as an armor ability. Sprint was optional, but from Halo 4 onward, it became a permanent built-in feature. It fundamentally shifted movement, and Halo purists have hated the ability since. But some brave souls, like u/Lumpycentaur9, believe it was “the best thing that happened to Halo.”
3 Midship Is A Bad Map
When a game has a competitive multiplayer scene, there will always be discussions about which maps are the best and most balanced. For example, Midship was introduced in Halo 2 and is often cited as one of the best Halo multiplayer maps within the community.
Reddit user u/DalanianKnight thinks otherwise. Not only do they think it is a “bad map,” but they even go so far as saying they “hate” Midship.
2 Halo 2’s Multiplayer Sucks
Only a select group of players got to experience Halo 2’s multiplayer in its heyday. Those who have played it on the original Xbox talk about it like it was the best gaming experience they’ve ever had. For a while, outsiders did not know what it was like to play this immaculate multiplayer experience.
However, now with the Master Chief Collection, the uninitiated can experience it, and those who have played it can fall in love all over again. Except, some might view Halo 2’s multiplayer as outdated or “unbalanced,” or “not fun,” like Reddit user u/Lord_Sylveon.
1 The Library Is A Good Level
While the Halo: Combat Evolved campaign is one of the most beloved single-player experiences within the Halo community, the seventh level, “The Library,” is the subject of contention among most fans.
The reasons players hate this mission is because the level design gets repetitive quickly, and the Flood are the only enemies they encounter. However, for Reddit user u/connormvc, “The Library” is one of their favorite Halo levels.
