Alongside the highly anticipated re-release of Halo 3 on PC, fans of the game were also gifted a new skull to unlock. The Acrophobia skull allows players to fly around the game’s many maps unrestricted by simply holding the jump button. This has understandably been a fan favorite addition, but it seems it is going away soon.
For those that don’t know, Halo 3 features a variety of skulls which modify the gameplay in some way. Many of these skulls are simply fun cosmetic changes like making grunts explode into confetti when the player gets a headshot on them, but others affect the gameplay, making it easier or harder.
The Acrophobia skull definitely makes things easier, and it has allowed players to see Halo 3 from a whole new perspective. What’s more, after the skull is unlocked, it can be used in any of the games from the Master Chief Collection, allowing for greater exploration in Halo and Halo 2 as well.
Unfortunately, it has been revealed that the Acrophobia skull is going away soon, but fans that unlock it before the deadline will get to keep it forever. By the end of the day on July 29th, players will no longer be able to acquire the Acrophobia skull, so interested players will need to get to work now to obtain the skull if they haven’t yet. It is unclear at the moment whether or not the skull will ever make a return later for players that may have missed the opportunity at launch, but it’s best not to risk it.
Unlocking the skull isn’t easy, but there is a trick to make things quicker. Players will need to kill 343 flying enemies in the campaign of Halo 3, and they must be playing on Normal or harder. The best place to get this achievement is during The Storm mission, as it features a ton of Buggers (Halo 3’s flying bug-like enemies). At one point a dropship releases a swarm of them, so the player should dispatch them and then reload the checkpoint. Rinse and repeat this a few times and the skull can be unlocked relatively quickly.
Acrophobia is an interesting addition to Halo 3 as it lets the players really break the game. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing since most of its players have probably already played through Halo 3 at one point or another, but it definitely allows for some creative strategies to beat Halo 3’s most difficult levels.
Halo 3 is available now for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox 360.
