Every gaming generation is defined by one genre or one game specifically, and in 2001 Microsoft gave of us a game that helped to change first-person shooters forever. That game was Halo, and it has since spawned several sequels, all of which focus on a single soldier called Master Chief, and his main mission is to save humanity from alien threats who could potentially destroy all life in the universe.
Chief is a Spartan-a genetically modified supersoldier who is capable of impressive feats on the battlefield. The video game landscape is filled with unique and terrifying villains, and one cannot help but wonder if an iconic hero like Chief would be able to beat some of them in a fight. There certainly are villains that Chief can take on, and this list will identify some of them, but there are also certain villains who can beat him with relative ease.
10 COULD DEFEAT: Bowser
Bowser can breathe fire, teleport, change his size, and use electrokinesis, but he also happens to be pretty quick despite his massive size. The iconic Nintendo villain may sound strong, but his plans are constantly being thwarted by a human plumber who may or may not pick up special abilities along the way.
Master Chief isn’t a plumber, and he doesn’t need a mushroom or fire flowers to take on Bowser. Chief can use virtually every gun and grenade from the Halo universe, and his Spartan armor gives him enhanced speed, agility, and reflexes, all of which would come in very handy.
9 WOULD LOSE TO: M. Bison
For the longest time, M. Bison has been the main antagonist of the Street Fighter franchise and he is also the series’ strongest and most heartless villain. Considering the durability of Chief’s Spartan armor, he should be able to hold his own against someone who primarily fights with his fists, but M. Bison is no ordinary human.
This man can level an entire city by himself-and that’s just by using a fraction of his strength, so breaking through Chief’s armor wouldn’t be an issue. M. Bison also knows how to use a type of dark negative energy called Psycho Power-and he can send this energy through an opponent’s body with just one well placed punch.
8 COULD DEFEAT: The Reapers
Andromeda may have been a let down but a lot of people still love the Mass Effect series, and the Reapers have been wreaking havoc in that universe for millions of years. These ancient synthetic-organic starships harvest entire races once they become technologically advanced enough.
Reapers may be huge and heavily armored, but they can be killed as long as someone has a lot of firepower at their disposal. If Chief got onto a Reaper, he would destroy it from the inside out with whatever guns he was given, and if they invaded his universe, he could use a Halo Array to wipe them out as a last resort.
7 WOULD LOSE TO: Kerrigan
When Starcraft players first met Sarah Kerrigan she was human, but thanks to a costly betrayal, she became an infested human who became the supreme leader of the Zerg-an insect-like race known for overrunning worlds.
As the Queen of Blades, Kerrigan is capable of creating psionic storms and shock waves by manipulating raw psychic energy, and she can use that same energy to turn someone like Chief into a living bomb. If Chief manages to survive these abilities, he won’t last long afterwards because she is incredibly fast and can attack him from a relatively safe distance.
6 COULD DEFEAT: Dr. Robotnik
Master Chief would not exist if it weren’t for science, but not every scientist seeks the betterment of mankind. If it wasn’t for Sonic the Hedgehog, Dr. Robotnik would have used his robots to take over the world a long time ago.
If Chief were forced to take on Robotnik, the robots would definitely be a problem, but these robots are not nearly as deadly as the Covenant and Prometheans. Chief’s armor will come in handy during such a fight, but he will still need to take cover at times, and once the machines are dealt with, Robotnik won’t be able to put up much of a fight.
5 WOULD LOSE TO: Diablo
Kerrigan may be strong, but she isn’t the only powerful being created by Blizzard. Diablo is the main villain of the series that is named after him, and as the Lord of Terror, he is the strongest demon in existence.
Diablo is able to attack with fire and lightening, but what makes him a real threat is his ability to manipulate and enhance a person’s fear, to the point that those fears can be manifested physically. Chief may act as though he isn’t afraid of anything, but everyone is afraid of something, and if that doesn’t work, Diablo can use fear to turn Chief’s allies against him.
4 COULD DEFEAT: Doctor Octopus
Spider-Man is arguably Marvel’s most popular superhero, and in 2018 Insomniac gave us a brand new game that was very successful. The game included several of Spider-Man’s more well known villains-including Otto Octavius, better known as Doctor Octopus.
Octavius is a genius and master strategist who uses four mechanical arms for movement and fighting. If Chief gets caught by any of these arms he’s going to get banged up a bit, but his armor should keep him from sustaining fatal injuries, and if he tosses a sticky grenade onto any of them, they’ll definitely be destroyed.
3 WOULD LOSE TO: Zeus
Chief has defeated many powerful alien beings, but he has never gone up against a true God. Zeus is the God of lightning, the sky, and of law and order, and he is the overpowered villain of the last two original God of War games.
Zeus is immortal and cannot be killed by mortal weapons, which means that guns and explosives won’t work on him-including those of alien origin. If that weren’t enough, he can generate and manipulate lightning in many ways, which means that he can disable Chief’s shields as well as all of his armor’s electronics.
2 COULD DEFEAT: Albert Wesker
Players have seen a variety of mutations in the Resident Evil franchise, but none have been as problematic as Albert Wesker’s because it essentially transformed him into an immortal monster who managed to retain his human appearance.
Wesker may have superhuman abilities and insane regeneration, but he can be killed. Granted it took a volcano and a rocket launcher to the face to do it, but he still died. If Chief uses an energy sword, Wesker is done for, because these swords cauterize every wound, which means that he won’t be able to regenerate.
1 WOULD LOSE TO: Oryx
Master Chief and Halo only exist because of Bungie, but the developer has since moved on to other things-primarily the Destiny franchise. Oryx was the main antagonist of the Taken King expansion, and the Hive God has devastated countless civilizations over the course of millions of years.
Guns can destroy Oryx’s body, but Chief would have to kill him again in his Throne World to finish him off, and that would be quite difficult considering the army of elite Hive that would block his way. Oryx’s trump card is his ability to take-which involves transporting someone to a different plane of existence in order to corrupt them at a cosmic level.
