After a long wait, Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery players were finally treated to the Year 5 update, giving them a chance to put their Prefect skills to the test, continue the quest for the Cursed Vault, and complete a slew of new classes. However, not all the changes have been well-received, as some players have noticed that Jam City has apparently lowered the reward they will get at the end of the year for winning the House Cup.
If players check the House Cup rankings right now in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery (assuming they are in Year 5), they will notice that the reward is only 50 gems, which is the lowest it has ever been. It’s possible this is because Year 5 is going to be the shortest year in Hogwarts Mystery with only seven chapters, though it’s also possible that these are just placeholder numbers.
After all, Year 4 originally had only had about seven chapters listed for it, but then an update greatly increased that number and it ended up being the longest chapter in the game to date. If Jam City does something similar with Year 5, then it stands to reason that it will also increase the number of gems players will earn at the end of the year.
Alternatively, perhaps Year 5 will actually be only seven chapters long, and maybe the 50 gem House Cup reward is going to stay. This may be disappointing to some players, but it’s worth pointing out that winning the House Cup is not exactly a difficult feat. In fact, players would have to go out of their way to be as poor of a student as possible to lose the House Cup in Hogwarts Mystery, so it has always essentially been free gems.
Jam City has also added more ways to earn free gems with some recent updates than there ever were in the past. For example, it has made it possible for players to watch in-game ads in exchange for gems, and while these ads have been appearing less frequently, they can still help players build up their gem supply for some of the bigger purchases in the game, like adopting pets.
Regardless of why Jam City has apparently reduced the House Cup reward in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, it’s sure to be a controversial decision, and it will be interesting to see if the reward is increased if more chapters are added to Year 5.
Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is out now for iOS and Android mobile devices.
