When it was announced that Harry Potter: Wizards Unite was being worked on by Niantic, developer of Pokemon GO, all eyes appeared to be on them to bring gamers of all crowds an authentic mobile Harry Potter experience. As Harry Potter is a franchise beloved by many, and as Pokemon GO was a worldwide success, Niantic seemed to be equipped to make mobile device owners feel as close to a wizard as possible. For a while, there hadn’t been much word on when the game would be releasing, though now, people in select regions can now experience the beta version of Harry Potter: Wizards Unite.
Planned for a release sometime in 2019, those looking forward to Niantic’s next release were previously able to pre-register for Harry Potter: Wizards Unite on the Google Play store. As of today, residents of both Australia and New Zealand can play the game on their iOS and Android devices.
Since the game is currently in beta, however, players shouldn’t expect every feature of the final game to be present, and the beta version will likely not be without bugs. In a release on the official website for Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, the development team stated that, in its current state, “Features, available, languages, and overall appearance are not final.” Furthermore, it says that the “product might be buggy,” though they are “looking forward to your feedback so that we can improve the game experience.”
As mentioned previously, details do remain scarce on the beta version, or final release, of Harry Potter: Wizards Unite in other countries. However, since it’s now out in Australia and New Zealand, any Niantic fans from the region might be advised to at least try it out.
While it’s admittedly frustrating that we don’t have a set-in-stone release for other areas yet, it will be interesting to hear what Australians and New Zealanders have to say about the game. Perhaps they’ll find that Harry Potter: Wizards Unite does bear similarities to Pokemon GO, though one can hope Niantic would give a Harry Potter AR game an identity all its own.
Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will be released sometime in 2019 on iOS and Android devices.
