Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, Niantic’s new augmented reality mobile game, launched at the end of last week, and players are now learning how to do things like brew potions in Wizards Unite, use Portkeys, and more. Indeed, quite a number of fans have downloaded Harry Potter: Wizards Unite since its release, but these numbers are still just a fraction of what was seen around the launch of Pokemon GO, Niantic’s previous AR offering.

Specifically, analyst group Sensor Tower indicates that Harry Potter: Wizards Unite was installed approximately 400,000 times in its first 24 hours. While this number of downloads was able to put the new augmented reality Harry Potter game at the top of the free app downloads chart on the U.S. iOS App Store, it does not even come close to Pokemon GO installs, which reached 7.5 million on the first day that the game was available.

Certainly, this astronomical figure was enough to make Pokemon GO the most downloaded app on its launch day, and this is not the only area where Pokemon GO’s release thoroughly bested that of Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. With respect to revenue, Sensor Tower states that Wizards Unite players spent “at least $300,000” on the game’s first day out, while Pokemon GO generated in the realm of $2 million in its first 24 hours, positioning the title as number one on the App Store’s top grossing chart.

Despite the fact that this data only focuses around the very beginning stages of these two games, it makes one thing quite clear: the fervor surrounding the launch of Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is an order of magnitudes less than what Pokemon GO saw when it was released. This is not meant to indicate that the launch of Wizards Unite was not a success, or that the game will not continue to grow, but it does suggest that the game is not the immediate smash that Pokemon GO was.

Some speculate that the reason for this is that Harry Potter does not have its roots in video games in the way that Pokemon does. Regardless of the cause though, it is certain that fans will continue to download Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, and the new mobile game will keep going for the foreseeable future.
