The next Batman movie, simply titled The Batman, is still over a year from releasing, meaning it’s impossible to guess if people will be excited for yet another cinematic version of the Dark Knight. But Warner Bros is taking its chances, because it’s already working on a TV spinoff set in the universe of the upcoming movie.

Variety reports that the studio has ordered a HBO Max-exclusive series that will focus on the Gotham City police department, making it the second TV series in recent years to focus on the cops of Batman’s world, after the Fox series Gotham. Set to be produced by the film’s director, Matt Reeves, and written by Terence Winter, creator of the award-winning crime drama Boardwalk Empire, the currently-untitled series is intended to launch “a new Batman universe across multiple platforms,” according to Variety.

Aside from brand-building, the report states that the series will allow for Reeves and Winter to build on The Batman’s examination of “the anatomy of corruption in Gotham City,” providing them with a deeper understanding of Reeves’ vision for Batman. That said, it’s yet to be revealed if any of the characters from the movie, including Robert Pattinson’s Batman, will make an appearance in the series.

“This is an amazing opportunity, not only to expand the vision of the world I am creating in the film,” Reeves said , “but to explore it in the kind of depth and detail that only a longform format can afford — and getting to work with the incredibly talented Terence Winter, who has written so insightfully and powerfully about worlds of crime and corruption, is an absolute dream.”

The Batman is slated to release in theaters on October 1, 2021, with a spinoff series to follow on HBO Max.
