Ninja Theory is using Unreal Engine 5 to develop Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2, Xbox confirms. The Unreal Engine 5 game engine, made by Epic Games, was the technology shown in the very first PS5 gameplay demo that released last month.
In a new post on the Xbox Wire detailing “everything” gamers need to know about the Xbox Series X, Xbox confirmed that PC and Xbox Series X game Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 is using Unreal Engine 5. The post said that developer Ninja Theory will “be building the game on Unreal 5 and leveraging the power of Xbox Series X to bring the Hellblade franchise to levels never before seen.” The Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 announcement trailer was shot in-engine, it also confirmed.
Ninja Theory isn’t the only Xbox development team that will be using Unreal Engine 5 to power its games. It has also been confirmed that inXile Entertainment, the developer of the Wasteland series, will be using Unreal Engine 5 for its next game. That game, an RPG, is a very different one from the adventure gameplay expected from Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 or what was seen in the Unreal Engine 5 demo and fans will be excited to see how the game engine can power a larger title.
However, it’s unclear if these two games will look anywhere near as good as the Unreal Engine 5 demo on PS5 did. Epic Games has confirmed that the Unreal Engine 5 demo is playable on PS5 and that is different to a game’s trailer just being shown in-engine like Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2. The game could turn out to be as good looking but Xbox and Ninja Theory have not shown any gameplay confirming that.
Epic Games has also declined to confirm if that Unreal Engine 5 demo is playable on Xbox Series X and it has said that it had to rewrite some parts of the game engine to work with the PS5’s SSD speeds. None of that suggests that Unreal Engine 5 games on Xbox Series X will look inferior, but fans haven’t seen what the game engine can do on the Xbox console.
It’s also unclear if there are any PS5 exclusives being developed with Unreal Engine 5. There have been rumors that Horizon Zero Dawn 2 is in development but developer Guerrilla Games used the Decima Engine for the first game and may using a new version of that game engine for the second title in the series.
Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 is coming to the Xbox Series X and PC.
