Comic artist and writer Mike Mignola’s iconic Hellboy will finally be getting the tabletop roleplaying game treatment, when Hellboy: The Roleplaying Game Kickstarter campaign launches later this summer. Mantic Games has teamed up with Mignola, Dark Horse Comics, Red Scar Publishing, and ENnie Award-winning writer and game developer Marc Langworthy to bring the world of our favorite red-skinned paranormal investigator to life.
The details we know so far about the game come from the blog post announcement on the Mantic Games website. No official launch date has been publicly released yet, but the Kickstarter pre-launch page is live now. Click the ‘notify me’ button in there to be notified when the campaign begins.
Hellboy: The Roleplaying Game will be using the 5th edition ruleset of the world’s most popular tabletop roleplaying game, and will allow us to immerse into a variety of roles, including an agent of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (B.P.R.D.), occult field researcher, B.P.R.D. security agent, one of the supernaturally-powered, and more. A quickstart guide and ready-to-play adventure with six pre-gen characters will be made available once the Kickstarter begins, which will give us more info on the classes and skills present in the game.
Publisher Mantic Games ran a successful Kickstarter for Hellboy: The Board Game in 2016 that summoned almost two million dollars. The game went to retail in 2019, and allows you to control Hellboy, Abe Sapien, Liz Sherman, and Johann Kraus in facing off against many of Hellboy’s most prominent enemies, including Rasputin. It’s doubtful these main characters will be available as PCs in Hellboy: The Roleplaying Game, but it will still be interesting to see their stats in DnD form.
Hellboy: The Roleplaying Game is being developed by Red Scar Publishing, founded by Langworthy in 2014. Together, they’ve helped create some quality games, including Kings of War The Roleplaying Game, Devil’s Run RPG, Conan: Adventures in An Age Undreamed Of Roleplaying Game, and more.
