According to research done by the folks at Playstationing, we might have a good idea when the PlayStation 5’s price point will be revealed.

After being delayed a week, Sony revealed the PlayStation 5 on June 11th but surprisingly did not announce a price. This has led to speculation that the PS5 will launch at a higher cost than the PS4.

What follows is each of the PlayStation console’s price tag, reveal date, and release date.

  • PlayStation 1: Price: $299. Reveal Date: May 11th, 1995. Release Date: December 3rd, 1994. PlayStation 2: Price: $299. Reveal Date: May 13th, 2000. Release Date: October 26th, 2000. PlayStation 3: Price: $499-$599. Reveal Date: May 8th, 2006. Release Date: November 11th, 2006. PlayStation 4: Price: $399.  Reveal Date: June 11th, 2013. Release Date: November 15th, 2013.

As you can see, PlayStation has traditionally announced its release date and price points by now. With the entire world being seemingly in flux because of Covid-19, it would not be a surprise to learn that Sony has altered its original reveal plans. As of now, there are rumors that the PS5’s price reveal will come on July 13th.

Despite the definite impact that Covid-19 has had on PlayStation’s plans, there might be other reasons for the delay. Rumors have it that Microsoft is planning to have the Xbox Series X undercut the PlayStation 5’s price. Sony might be holding back their cards until after Xbox plays its hand.

The last time a Microsoft console undercut Sony, was during the PS3 and Xbox 360 generation. After telling gamers it was time to get a second job during the reveal of the PS3 at E3 2006, gamers answered with a definite no and instead flocked to the Xbox brand and lost the generation.

After rebounding in a big way with the PS4, perhaps Sony is being cautious, and the price of the Xbox Series X may cause them to alter their own price plans. With how unstable the global economy is right now, it might not be the best window to launch a $5oo entertainment console.

With the PlayStation 5 set for release this holiday season, we’re sure to learn its price soon enough. Hopefully, it will be at a price we can all afford.
