Resident Evil Village will feature a pair of returning characters, with one perhaps taking on a new role as the game’s villain.

Last week, we got to see the announcement trailer for Resident Evil 8, or Resident Evil Village, as Capcom prefers to call it. The trailer showcased a creepy European village that has become a hotspot for what appears to be werewolves, taking Resident Evil in a more classical horror direction.

Fans of the franchise will likely have already noted at least one character in the game, but we’ll go over details on both the known personalities that will return in Resident Evil Village.

Starting with Ethan Winters, the returning protagonist from Resident Evil 7. The Los Angeles-native systems engineer managed to survive the Dulvey Incident and find his long lost wife Mia before escaping to a life of suburban bliss. Unfortunately, it looks like putting the past behind him is impossible as Chris Redfield shows up on the scene to blow his idyllic life to smithereens.

And yes, Chris Redfield is once again playing a central role in a Resident Evil game. The same guy that’s been in almost as many games as Jill Valentine can add number 10 to the list. Although portrayed as the stoic soldier taking down bioterrorism in its many undead forms in previous games, this time it seems that Redfield has a more sinister aura about him.

At the end of the trailer, Redfield appears in Ethan’s living room and empties a silenced handgun into an adjacent woman, prompting Ethan to scream “why?!” The woman is likely Ethan’s wife Mia, and Chris seems to be showing up to terminate a looming bioterrorist threat.

How does Ethan escape Redfield to wind up somewhere in Europe? That’ll have to wait for future trailers.

We know that Resident Evil Village will make a few callbacks to Resident Evil 4, not the least being the setting of a small European village with a castle in the distance. There’s also going to be a very similar inventory management system and more of a focus on action in the survival horror game.

There’s no release date set for Resident Evil Village yet other than 2021 on next-gen consoles.
