There may not be a video game character as famous as Nintendo’s main mascot Mario. If there is, it’s either just a yellow mouth being chased by ghosts or a Tetris block, but it seems more likely that Mario wins it.
With popularity comes parody, and boy has the Italian plumber turned kingdom saving hero been parodied. There are countless cartoons, shorts, and comics mocking Mario, his brother Luigi, and the rest of the characters that make out his world. Here are ten comics that are particularly hilarious.
10 Earth’s Protector
When Mario takes items from bricks, is he taking them from someone else? This comic by John Cullen of Nellucnhoj.com imagines that he is taking his power-ups at the expense of others, or in this case, the whole world.
When Mario releases a power star from the brick, it escapes, flying off into space. The only problem is that the star was protecting the planet the same way it protects Mario when he touches it. Goodbye, Earth, you had a good run.
9 Pitching Kart Courses
Mario and his friends (and enemies) love to take time off from their typical kingdom upkeep and race go-karts. You know, for fun. They do, however, race over dangerous terrains such as icy mountains, rocky cliffs, and even a narrow rainbow suspended through space.
This comic from NerdRageComics pokes fun at the logic behind these courses by giving us a peek at what a planning meeting looks like before the gang begins construction on a new track. Plus, like comics to follow, it bullies Luigi.
8 Turtle Power
Nothing beats a good crossover, but Mario and Luigi may find this one a little rougher than playing games with Sonic and his friends for Olympic medals.
This little Koopa went and got some backup to take down the brothers that have been stomping on turtles all over the kingdom. Backup that is big, armed, and looks awfully familiar. This one comes from the now-defunct XYGaming.
7 Well, He’s Paper
This simple comic comes from comic artist Danny Mork and does what many great video game parody comics do, apply logic. In Paper Mario, Mario uses an assortment of abilities to take on a wide range of enemies, with his paper anatomy never really being acknowledged.
However, if he is truly made of paper in the game, then he’s got some answering to do. Not only does he throw fireballs he holds, but he also fights large fireballs and often kills them by jumping on them. Now we can see how that would actually work out for him.
6 Rejected Power-Ups
This comic skips any kind of narrative to instead just show a series of increasingly horrible ideas. It comes from comedy comic site Honey Dill and the simplicity of it is what makes it so funny.
The longer you stare at any of the Marios the funnier they become, with all of them competing for most absurd. Then there’s Worm Eyes Mario, which starts horrifying and stays horrifying no matter how long you look.
5 Expensive Plumbing
Finally, thanks to John McNamee, we get to see Mario doing some actual plumbing. The first joke is, of course, Mario greatly overcharging his client for plumbing work.
Funnier, though, is the implication being that in the world of Mushroom Kingdom, everything is dangerous. Even a 9 to 5 like plumbing means dodging bullets, man-eating plants, and other angry creatures. I can’t even imagine what a job like fire-fighter would have to deal with.
4 We Love To Party
Another from NerdRage, this time (finally) acknowledging how sadistic Mario’s parties are. The most popular man in the Mushroom Kingdom must have taken lessons from horror film trap master Jigsaw when crafting his “fun” game-filled extravaganzas.
He often makes his friends race, fight, carry explosives or touch sleeping monsters until they wake up all in the name of simple fun with no objective further than winning a giant board game. This evil is showcased here as we see Mario’s friends risking life and limb to play his games. This is all made worse by knowing that even if a character manages to survive all the games, they could still lose when someone else gets a bunch of bonus stars for reasons we all know are silly.
3 Secret Friends
On the subject of Mario’s parties and recreational events, he does seem to quick to invite his enemies. A Goomba, Koopa, or even a giant bullet would all be acceptable invitees since they just happen to be employed by the evil tyrant Bowser. We all have to work, and who knows what the job market looks like in the kingdom.
This comic from artist Inyuo surpasses the acceptable and skips to the core issue. Mario continues to invite Bowser, the terrorist that wants to destroy the whole kingdom, to play with him and his friends. I guess it’s worth risking catastrophic disasters to make sure everyone has a doubles partner in tennis.
2 Doctors Without Borders
The first of a double bill of Doctor Mario comics, this one shows what happens when Mario needs extra help in the hospital. It comes from Beckscomics and has one important goal in mind, make fun of Mario’s brother, Luigi.
The comic makes the case that Mario would make a dinosaur a doctor before his brother, who is often played as his equal in their respective games. Look, Luigi may have proved himself in those haunted mansions, but there has to be a punching bag and it isn’t going to be Yoshi. Just look how cute he is!
1 Kirby Goes To The Doctor
The second Doctor Mario comic, by Safely Endangered Comics, features a special guest appearance from another Nintendo superstar, Kirby. Kirby’s own game series has shown his insane abilities, and the Super Smash Brothers franchise has shown what happens when he sucks up other famous characters, including even Doctor Mario.
He takes on their appearance and abilities. Thank goodness he gets both and not just their look, or Kirby’s incoming patients would be in for a really bad time.
