20 years after the cult classic was released on PS1, Hogs of War is back. Not as a remaster per se, but as a tabletop strategy game.
Remaster fever is in full swing and has been for a number of years now. If a game enjoyed even a modicum of success upon its first release, and that initial release happened more than 15 years ago, chances are there are people campaigning for the title to be remade. Despite developers’ best efforts, not every single game from the past can be remastered.
That being said, we are as guilty as everyone else when it comes to craving certain remasters. Since Crash and Spyro have had their moments in the sun, we think Croc deserves the same treatment too, as well as the original Rayman game. However, the one game we would love to see remastered more than any other is Hogs of War.
The British made, turn-based game pitted pigs hailing from different countries against each other in a game that was inspired by World War II. We always considered it a little like Worms but kicked up a gear. Chances of Hogs of War getting a full remake, remaster, or sequel are slim, but a company called Stone Sword Games is working on the next best thing.
A tabletop version of the 20-year-old PS1 game. Details on the game are sparse right now, but the project is on Kickstarter and currently has 680 followers. Pretty impressive considering the Kickstarter doesn’t officially being until September 22, 2020, and a good sign that the project will get off the ground with relative ease. Its creators describe it as “Warhammer-lite with X-Wing vibes.”
As for whether this is an official Hogs of War game or not, that would technically be a no. However, Stone Sword Games previously created and released a card game based on the title with the original developer’s blessing. The assumption is that this tabletop version has received the same treatment. Hogs Of War The Miniatures Game is on Kickstarter and patrons will be able to pledge to it from September 22, 2020.
