The new Horizon Zero Dawn comic takes us deeper into Aloy’s world. The comic expands on the characters and lore of the game and features artwork and writing from two women.

The comic is being published by Titan Comics in conjunction with Guerilla Games and expands on the characters and backstory of the Horizon Zero Dawn world. Award-winning writer, Anne Toole, who worked on the original game heads up the writing duties with artwork by Ann Maulina. Maulina was chosen because of her incredible fan art, which impressed the game’s Studio director, Jan-Bart Van Beek.

This sequel continues the story of the game but focuses on Aloy’s friend Talanah. Talahah was an NPC in Horizon, and now we get to learn more about her. According to Youtube, Narrative Director Ben McCaw said, “Everybody wants to see Aloy and everyone wants to see more of Aloy. We are hoping to provide that with the comic book. But we also really wanted to focus in on other major characters in the Horizon Universe, and Talanah was the perfect start.”

McCaw continues, “She is the Sunhawk of the Hunter’s Lodge in Meridian and shes’ also a great friend of Aloys and we really felt like she was perfect for her own adventure and we wanted to give her a chance to shine.”

Issue #1 starts where the game left off. Aloy has defeated Hades to save Meridian and has gone off on another quest. Talanah is the Sunhawk of the Hunter’s lodge in Meridian and finding it a bit tough to adjust. She gets tired of the petty squabbles at the lodge and decides to take a contract and go back into the wild to hunt. He teams up with Aloy before encountering new terrifying beasts that she’s never encountered before.

It’s fantastic that the comic continues the story from where it left off in the game. It also has all the elements that made the game exciting and showcases another character. We get to see Aloy build on her relationship with Talanah, as well as the introduction of new creatures we haven’t seen before. There are also enough hunts and battles to keep fans of the game satisfied. As the story progresses, there’ll undoubtedly be more mysteries to unravel and new characters to meet.

It will be interesting to see how much of the story from the comic makes it into the sequel. Horizon Forbidden West is due in 2021 and promises more lush landscapes and mechanical beasts to fight.  If Guerilla can give fans a taste of what’s to come and build up some excitement it will be amazing.

The first free episode of the Horizon Zero Dawn comic is already out. Issue #1 drops on August 5, just in time for the game’s PC release on August 7.
