Horizon Zero Dawn is now available on PC, giving an entirely new group of players the chance to experience Aloy’s journey for themselves. As they make their way through the post-apocalyptic world of HZD, these fans will become intimately familiar with the various weapons that Aloy has at her disposal. One of these weapons is the Spear, and indeed some players may be curious about how they might go about upgrading this offensive tool.
While players are able to boost the base damage of their Spear in the early stages of Horizon Zero Dawn, by completing the In Her Mother’s Footsteps side quest that is given by Thok, the big upgrade to this melee weapon does not come until The Frozen Wilds DLC. This means that a player needs to be around level 30 before they can upgrade their Spear in HZD, and the process begins by speaking with Kamut in the camp north of Song’s Edge.
This will initiate an errand called A Secret Shared, and completing it gives the Spear one modification slot that can be used to improve the weapon significantly. With respect to where mods for the Spear come from, they can be found in Treasure Boxes, which are obtained from vendors and as quest rewards, and by dispatching Thunderjaws, Stormbirds, and other enemies. As such, players should earn plenty of Spear modifications through standard play and will likely not need to go out of their way to find them.
With respect to the A Secret Shared errand, it centers around obtaining a Rail Part from a Drone Hangar at the far north end of the Frozen Wilds. Doing this is fairly straightforward once a player reaches the designated location, requiring them to just complete a couple of simple puzzles and defeat a Daemonic Stalker, and fans that find themselves stuck on any parts of this errand can watch a full walkthrough of A Secret Shared in the video above.
To note, there is actually a second melee weapon that players will obtain by making their way through Horizon Zero Dawn’s main story, though details on that weapon have not been included here to avoid spoilers. However, it is worth mentioning that this second melee weapon can be upgraded to have two modification slots by completing the A Secret Shared errand, and these slots will be automatically unlocked if a player finishes the errand before obtaining the weapon in question.
Horizon Zero Dawn is out now for PC and PlayStation 4.
