This week Bungie promised to give Destiny 2 players more info about the additions and changes coming to its shooter. And now, in the weekly Bungie blog post, the developer has outlined what those changes will be, and they are quite substantial. From Masterwork Armor to Shader deletion, there were a lot of topics for Bungie to cover, but one that will have the most immediate impact is the change to raid rewards.
Guaranteed Loot
It only took 4+ plus months to get there, but Bungie is finally guaranteeing a drop for every raid encounter in Leviathan and Eater of Worlds. Gone are the days of only getting Calus Tokens, replaced with a system that, frankly, should have been in the game from the beginning.
Moreover, Bungie is unifying the loot drop tables in both raids so that any item can drop from any encounter, with a few exceptions. On top of that, players will also have the chance of getting an exotic armor piece or exotic weapon from each encounter. And if you complete a Prestige encounter, items will drop for a Normal and Prestige completion.
Raid Vendor
Outside of changes that are fairly obvious, Bungie is also introducing new systems and ways to earn rewards as well. First up, the raid vendor Benedict-44 will now have a rotating inventory of items that players can buy in exchange for Calus Tokens and Legendary Shards. The only caveat to that is the player must have completed the raid before trying to buy an item and on the appropriate difficulty. So if you want to buy the Prestige Leviathan helmet, you need to beat the Prestige Leviathan raid during that week first.
Unique Raid Perks
The other big change is that raid armor will now come with unique perks that benefit players in the raid. These perks will also work across multiple armor pieces, provided that the player has it on one piece. It’s not entirely clear how that swapping works, but it sounds as though once an armor piece has a perk on it, then that perk becomes part of its potential set. Adding a new perk doesn’t remove that perk but simply turns it off.
Bungie only detailed one of the perks, which gives extra Solar ability damage on the Leviathan, but the developer says that its focus was on giving players boosts throughout the endgame experience. In Destiny 1, many raid armor perks were only good for a specific encounter, but these perks are more useful all around.
New Raid Ghost Shell
And finally, the raid loot pool will include the Contender’s Shell, arguably one of the best ghost shells introduced for Destiny 2. The ghost shell will come with three unique perks themed around the two raids. The Contender’s Shell perks are:
- Seeker of Brilliance: Each encounter has a chance to drop Bright Engrams. Seeker of Opulence: Exotics dropped from raid encounters have a 50% chance of pulling from a pool of items the player doesn’t have. Think of this perk like a way to turn exotic drops into Fated Engram drops. Seeker of Glory: Tracks the number of raid encounters completed.
If nothing else, the changes to raid rewards are going to make future endgame experiences worth completing on a regular basis. It might not entice players back right now, but future content drops should better support the grind.
Destiny 2 is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
