Although fans of the popular battle royale title Fortnite have to wait one more day for the week 9 challenges, patch version 5.40 is here, bringing with it the High Stakes event. As part of this ongoing event, Epic Games is introducing a new limited-time mode (LTM) known as The Getaway. While the way it works is relatively simple in theory, facing down other squads of jewel hunters will not be an easy task.
The ultimate goal in Fortnite’s new mode is to acquire a jewel and make it to one of four getaway vans. Doing so earns the players a victory royale. These jewels can only be found in special supply drop safes, which will be found along the edge of the first storm circle. It’s also worth mentioning that opening these special safes takes much longer than a standard supply drop.
At all times, four jewels will be on the battle island. If a player escapes with one or one is lost in the storm, a new supply drop will bring in a replacement. Notably, whenever a jewel is picked up by a player, they become visible on the map to everyone for 30 seconds, turning that player into a high-profile target. That player will gain health and shields over time from the jewel, but it will also slow their movement speed by 10%.
The entire LTM will only have four total vans, however, so they will not be replaced like jewels. Three will arrive early in the match, with one arriving closer to the end. They will float in mid-air, so jewel carriers will have to build up and interact to earn that coveted Victory Royale. Once they arrive, safe drops and vans can be seen on the map at all times.
Other details for this LTM include:
- 12 red supply drops will land at the beginning, bringing long-range weapons, items, and are the only way to obtain the new Grappler in this LTM. Players get 50% more from harvesting. This mode will only feature rare or higher weapons. To reduce mobility in van engagements, Rifts, Rift-To-Gos, and Launchpads will not appear in this mode. K/D and wins ARE tracked in this mode.
While some have been waiting for this mode since their first glimpse of it, it’s exciting now that it is available and solid details are confirmed. As more about the High Stakes event develops, check back here for details! Season 5 is almost over, and it seems like the season intends to go out on a high note.
Fortnite is available now in early access on iOS, Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, with an Android beta currently underway.
