There was never really any doubt that Red Dead Redemption 2 was going to be a massive game. Rockstar stated before launch that it would be the biggest world they had ever endeavored to create, and it even contains the entirety of the first game’s map. But exactly how long does it take to cross Red Dead Redemption 2’s various biomes and locations? About 16 minutes, if you subtract a few gunfights and obstacles.

A new video shows off the impressive trek, which clocks in at about 21 minutes if you leave in the other distractions that will inevitably pull players off of the trail. This puts it almost exactly in line with another massive open world game, Assassin’ Creed Origins, which took nearly exactly the same amount of time to journey across.

Needless to say, this is a healthy amount of time to simply go from furthest point to furthest point. Keep in mind that this is also on horseback, though the horse’s stats are never shown, which would factor into the total time as the horses within the game are fairly nuanced thanks to horse bonds. Players will likely find themselves utilizing slower methods of travel from time to time, so there will be instances where the trek takes much longer.

The full video is worth watching for players that want to get a sense of the game’s different environments. The total playable area is supposed to cover roughly five southwestern states, though the game doesn’t quite have the same sense of scale. However, the diversity one would actually see while making a journey through five different states is represented pretty fairly in Red Dead Redemption 2, and it’s obvious that Rockstar took the time to breathe life into every zone.

Red Dead Redemption 2 hasn’t been out very long, but it’s already generating a ton of Game of the Year buzz. The world Rockstar has crafted for their game is big, detailed, and nuanced, though that likely came at a high human cost if the stories of 100-hour crunch weeks are to be believed. Regardless, Rockstar apparently knocked this game out of the park, and, hopefully, the studio releases some story DLC for players to dive into later on.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is available now on Xbox One and PS4.
