Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and its free sibling battle royale title Call of Duty: Warzone have been smash hits over the past year, although there’s been one major complaint: file size. Considering many current generation consoles came equipped with 500GB hard drives, the 200GB required to install Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is not insignificant.

Fortunately, the team at Infinity Ward has been hard at work on helping to alleviate large file size woes. While a recent attempt to reduce filesize initially left some Xbox users with a more than doubled patch update size, this issue has since been resolved, and additional (hopefully more successful) methods to reduce file size have been announced. Here’s one you can do now.

First, players need to launch into Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. From here, go to the main menu, and select options. On the general tab, if players go to the bottom, there is a section called Game Installs. From here, players can select the files they would like to keep or remove, although be warned, some files once removed may impact playability. Below, we highlight those steps for ease of use.

How To Reduce Call of Duty: Modern Warfare File Size:

  • Load Game Main Menu Options General Game Installs Remove Unwanted Files DO NOT REMOVE DATA PACK 1

Which files can you remove, then? Depends on what you like to play, but we’ll break it down for you. Do not remove Data Pack 1, as it is required for all Spec Ops and Multiplayer play. Don’t know what Special Ops even is? Feel free to delete Special Ops Pack, and Special Ops Pack 2. Do you avoid regular multiplayer lobbies like the plague, but enjoy jumping into Special Ops? Do the reverse, and delete the multiplayer packs. If you remove Data Pack 1, neither will work properly.

From here, it is up to players on what to keep or remove piece by piece. If you’ve beaten the campaign, or have no interest in playing it, get rid of it. Multiplayer and Spec Ops can be removed without impacting one another, but both require Data Pack 1. You have been warned! Enjoy the freed up space, to make room for the next update.
