Horses in Red Dead Online are a core part of the game. They’re used for travel, racing, escaping, and exploring. No matter what, your loyal steed will always be by your side. Why then does the game always seem to spawn you on the wrong one?
This quick guide will tell you everything you need to know to ensure you always have the right horse for the right occasion. If it’s any consolation, people seem to be having horse problems in the single-player game, too.
3 Buying A New Horse
As much as you may love the first horse Rockstar gives you, it gets outclassed pretty quickly. That means that an upgrade is in order. You can either buy a horse from the stables or the catalog, but you should be aware that all horses are different sizes, so seeing them in person is advisable.
Before you can buy a new bronco, you’ll need some space for it to buck. Be sure to check that you have a spare stable slot. If not, you can purchase another one at the stables. Then, just pick whatever equine friend best suits your current needs, and there you have it: a new horse.
2 Setting Your Main Horse
Now, you need to set the right horse as your main one; this is the one you’ll be whistling for and the one that you’ll leave the stable on. To set your main horse while in the stable, make sure it has a saddle on it. You can either remove the saddle from your previous horse and put it on your new one, or buy another. Of course, that’ll get real expensive real quick. After you’ve got your saddle situated, just look in the bottom right corner of the screen and press the button marked ‘“Make Active”.
1 Setting Your Specialist Horse
You’d think that setting your horse as active would make it your main horse, but you’d be wrong. Since there are so many horses that are all suited to different situations, Rockstar added the option to set a different horse for different events. However, they just forgot to tell anyone about this option.
Go into the online quick menu and go down into the “Stables” tab. From there, go into “Horses”, then “Speciality”. Here, you’ll see four options. Go into each one and set your desired horse. You’ll need a saddle on whatever horse you’re setting, so if you want to set more than just your main horse, you’ll need to shell out for additional seating.
For races, opt for your fastest horse with the best stamina, and don’t worry about health. If you know you’ll be doing a story mission involving a big gunfight, maybe take a sturdier steed. If you just have one favourite that you want to bring everywhere, then set them as the horse for all four categories. Never again should you start a race or mission on the wrong mount. Just make sure you update the specialty choices whenever you get a new horse.
