Rare’s Banjo-Kazooie requires players to find Bottles the Mole in numerous places throughout the learn new moves, but thanks to a glitch that can be performed in the menu on the Xbox 360 and Xbox One, players can avoid Bottles all the way and start the game with all moves unlocked.
Players traditionally have to find many molehills throughout the game in order to learn attacks and movement from Bottles. The abilities include Talon Trotting, Egg Firing, Shock Spring Jumping, Beak Bombing, Wonderwing and so much more. In normal play, players won’t expect to have unlocked their final move until they reach Gobi’s Valley, the seventh area in the game, but here’s something you probably didn’t know. You can unlock them all from the title screen, before the main menu even appears. This serves quite an advantage and will prevent players from needing to backtrack to earlier areas after unlocking required moves.
This glitch was discovered by the speedrunner markusman64ds and it is used by speedrunners playing in the Any% Xbox category of the game, though it is very simple for any average player to pull off. Here are the steps:\
Step 1
Load up the game from dashboard and do not skip any of the opening cutscenes or splash screens. You should come to a scene where Banjo is playing the banjo, while Tootie and Mumbo enter the scene slightly later. Hold the right analog stick down and to the right and hold it there until told to release. It doesn’t matter when you start holding it, as long as you are holding it by the end of the cutscene.
Step 2
Shortly after Banjo takes out his banjo a second time, you’re going to want to pay close attention for when the screen starts to fade to black. The fade-out lasts about a second and will fade out towards the middle of the screen as seen below. As soon as the screen fade-out begins, you’re going to want to mash the start button six times very quickly. You should be holding the right stick down and to the right at the same time. You have until the fade-out ends to do so, which is plenty of time.
Step 3
Hitting the start button would normally skip the cutscene, but doing it during the fade-out actually cycles the demos that appear on the title screen. Doing so six times should start the Rusty Bucket Bay demo. Since you are holding down and to the right, the demo will register that input as it was done during the load, and will turn Banjo around in the demo. He will run off the cliff and die during the fade-in.
Step 4
Dying in the demo will glitch the game and cause it to automatically start, skipping the menu. At this point, you can release the right stick. The game will spawn you in Rusty Bucket Bay, the ninth world in the game. By this point in the game, you will have unlocked all moves. You can then simply exit Rusty Bucket Bay and traverse back through Grunty’s Lair to the starting area, Spiral Mountain. You will have all moves unlocked, though none of the Jiggies or collectibles will be collected, none of the music note doors will be open and none of the mission will be complete. You can play through the full game as normal, but with all the moves in your catalog.
