Debuting on Fox Kids in 1993, Animaniacs entertained viewers with the wacky antics of Yakko, Wakko, and Dot for 99 episodes before the series came to an end in 1998 on The WB. Now, Hulu has announced that an Animaniacs reboot will premiere on the streaming service on Friday, November 20, 2020.
Hulu ordered the Animaniacs reboot for a two-season run back in January 2018 in partnership with Steven Spielberg and Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution. News of the reboot coincided with the streaming service adding the existing episodes of Animaniacs and companion shows, Pinky and the Brain, Pinky, Elmyra and the Brain, and Tiny Toon Adventures to its library.
The first season of the Animaniacs reboot will consist of 13 episodes with original voices actors Rob Paulsen, Jess Harnell, and Tress MacNeille reprising their roles as the Warner siblings while Maurice LaMarche will also return to voice the smarter half of fan-favorite characters Pinky and the Brain. As with the original series, Hulu’s Animaniacs will find Yakko, Wakko, and Dot wreaking havoc on the Warner Bros. studio lot and getting into comedic mischief immediately upon their return to their beloved home in the iconic WB Water Tower. Meanwhile, Pinky and the Brain will continue their quest to take over the world. The show’s second 13-episode season will debut on Hulu in 2021.
Produced by Amblin Television in association with Warner Bros. Animation, the reboot will see Steven Spielberg returning as executive producer with Warner Bros. Animation president Sam Register and Blue Ribbon Content, Amblin Television Co-Presidents Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey. Showrunner Wellesley Wild is also on board as an executive producer while Gabe Swarr serves as a co-executive producer.
The Animaniacs reboot could be welcomed by Hulu subscribers in search of more family-friendly entertainment on the streaming service. While Hulu already has an extensive library of original content, some might argue that much of its upcoming programming is a little too geared towards an older audience.
Of course, others who grew up with the series could go either way on the Animaniacs reboot. While some might be excited to see the beloved trio of siblings return for more insane adventures, others might be getting tired of the seemingly growing list of TV reboots.
The original Animaniacs is now available on Hulu. The rebooted version will arrive November 20, 2020.
