With June nearly upon us, IGN has pulled back the curtain on its “Summer of Gaming” digital event. Announced back in April with an impressive lineup of publishers signing on, IGN has managed to amass a full three weeks worth of reveals and live streams for gamers across the globe. That’s way more than any E3 could contain.
The main gist of this event is the “IGN Expo.” Taking place on June 5, 8, and 9, this will be similar to how developers used to host E3 conferences with small streams dedicated to specific announcements. IGN is teasing big reveals from CD Projekt Redd, Blizzard, and Microsoft, likely boasting some next-gen games for us to marvel at.
As for the game reveals, there are nine exclusive reveals planned for the first day alone. We’ll be treated to the unveiling of three brand new titles from Funcom and Merge Games alongside footage of currently announced projects. The list is rather staggering, spanning multiple weeks with different announcements planned for practically every day.
Listing out everything would make this article insanely long, but I’ll quickly go over some highlights. Mafia: Definitive Edition will be getting a gameplay reveal on June 15. Sega will be showing off some new footage from Yakuza: Like a Dragon on June 9. Torchlight III will get a gameplay showcase and interview with series creator Max Schafer on June 18. It’s a lot of solid stuff.
IGN will also be hosting a variety of charity events to raise money for COVID-19 research. The biggest highlight of this will be Animal Crossing: Celebrity Island Tours. A day-long event, a number of different pop culture icons will be making a visit to different islands and exploring the inner workings of New Horizons. Some of the celebrities involved include Candice Patton, Simu Liu, Felicia Day, Shannon Woodward, Cliff Bleszinski, Matthew Mercer, Austin Creed, and Michelle Zauner.
The sheer breadth of content here is impressive, even if some of the games are currently unknown. I wouldn’t count on seeing the likes of Nintendo making a surprise visit, but we’ll probably get a good look at some PS5 and Xbox Series X gameplay here.
