Immortals Fenyx Rising’s Prometheus is a hoot of a narrator, roasting Zeus as he follows the player’s tale of heroism. For those unfamiliar, Fenyx Rising is an open-world game by Ubisoft that takes place in ancient Greece, where a titan called Typhon has broken free, imprisoned the Gods, turned humans to stone, and caused complete havoc in the world.

You, as a demihuman, were spared and must fix everything that the titan destroyed. The King of the Gods Zeus, with nowhere else to go, went to his imprisoned cousin Prometheus as a last resort. Learn about the story behind the figure of Prometheus in Greek mythology, along with many of the hidden contexts behind him.

10 10. He Tends To Touch On The Lesser-Known Myths

Since he doesn’t get many visitors up on that lonely mountain, there are not many people for Prometheus to chat with. So when he does, he takes the opportunity to talk about anything and everything to his heart’s content.

No matter what god or myth, big or small, he’ll go into as much detail as he can about them solely because he loves to tell stories. Prometheus’s dramatic narration drives Zeus insane and he thrives off it. Another theory, of course, is that he just does this on purpose to rile up the God he hates the most.

9 9. He’s Extremely Smart, Which Is Why Zeus Fears Him

Prometheus is fascinating because while he’s a Titan, he’s way more intelligent and less monstrous than his rock-throwing multi-limbed cousins. Those guys are easy for the gods to keep under control, but Prometheus was likely seen as a bit more of a threat due to his wisdom. Context clues show he might even be more intelligent than the Gods themselves, who seem to have a habit of thinking with their powers and muscles more than anything else.

8 8. He Can See The Future

At first, it’s confusing to the player how Prometheus is telling the story of Fenyx if it’s happening in real-time. Throughout his narrations, it becomes obvious that he can see into a time far beyond the scope of ancient Greece. Thus, he would definitely be familiar with modern things, similar to the way Merlin in Sword in the Stone was.

Perhaps the most blatant example is when he refers to planetaria/planetariums at one point, a phrase which Zeus has never heard of. This is because planetariums were, in fact, not something invented until the late 1700s, so they would not have been in existence for thousands of years after the events of the game.

7 7. He’s A Messenger, But Not Necessarily An Ally

Titan Prometheus was never naturally a friend to the Gods, but he was not much friendlier toward people either, despite the gifts he granted them. He simply does what needs to be done for the sake of the continuum itself. Every culture has a wise man figure, somebody who knows every secret but can’t tell because humans need to learn for themselves as part of their quest. Note how Prometheus gave the freezing people in caves the wheel and fire but left them to figure out how to use it on their own.

A wise man’s calling in life is to guide humanity regardless of what consequences may come. Prometheus knew he would get in big trouble for stealing fire from the Gods, but didn’t care because he knew it was the only way for the world to move forward.

6 6. He Has Receipts On Every Terrible Thing Zeus Has Done

Getting a one-up on someone as powerful as the King of the Gods is a pretty difficult thing to do. Prometheus and he had never gotten along to begin with, but Zeus chaining him to a rock was surely the straw that broke the camel’s back. There’s no better way for Prometheus to anger the god of thunder than to dismantle his arrogance by reminding him what an awful person he was to his many lovers and children in the past. Prometheus even uses his power of all-knowing to tell him the correct story of how Aphrodite was born and traumatizes him in the process.

5 5. He Knows People Are The Answer To The Future

Prometheus didn’t give fire and the wheel to humans because he wanted to be nice, he did it because he knew something had to be done to take down the power of the gods a notch. He knew that the gods’ inflated egos would be their eventual undoing, but that humans would go on to explore, create and continue to innovate in life. Gods don’t have much of a drive for such things because they don’t get old or sick. They don’t have reason to get better because they are, in their way, flawless. Humans don’t have magic, so they need to keep working hard to shape the world they want to live in.

4 4. ‘Fenyx Rising’ Is A Reference To His Original Myth

The old myth goes that there was a time when humans were living in caves in darkness. When Prometheus stole fire from the Gods and brought it to them, it changed their lives completely.

Fire allowed them to cook food, stay warm on cold nights, and work without the sun. Fenyx is a play on Phoenix, or the bird that burned to death and then rose out of the ashes. Fenyx is the fire that will rise from the apocalypse caused by Typhon and save both humanity and the gods.

3 3. He Stayed Sane While Locked Up By Spying On Things

If there’s only one to know about Prometheus, it’s that he literally sees everything. He’s the nosy neighbor that watches you so close he probably knows what brand of flaxseed you buy from the supermarket. The poor guy had to find some kind of entertainment while stuck chained up, and what better entertainment to view than the constant scandals and drama so prevalent in the Greek myths?

2 2. His Blue Eyes Mean Something

Throughout the game, the player will notice that the gods and mythical creatures have differently colored eyes depending on what kind of power they represent.

Blue often represents intelligence and wisdom, which is why both Prometheus and Athena have them. Zeus’s yellow ones are for his divinity and majesty, while Aphrodite’s light pink ones represent love and femininity.

1 1. The Eagle Ate His Liver For A Reason

Prometheus didn’t lose his liver every day because the bird had a taste for it fried with onions. In ancient Greece, the liver was believed to be the very source of the soul and intelligence, so this was the ultimate way for him to be punished. Luckily for Fenyx Rising’s Prometheus, that kind of science was clearly wrong.
