Immortals Fenyx Rising was one of Ubisoft’s most interesting releases of the last half-decade. The open-world adventure set in a land of mythological fantasy had players customize their version of Fenyx, a young Greek tasked with vanquishing evil.
Its highly saturated colors and chunky art style make it kid-friendly, but that doesn’t mean adults haven’t had a blast with it. For those who have completed their time with the game, though, it’s time to look at some open-world games they should consider playing after finishing Immortals Fenyx Rising.
10 Marvel’s Spider-Man
Despite being able to explore a fully-realized video game version of New York City, some people wouldn’t consider Marvel’s Spider-Man to be an open-world game. For those looking for another family-friendly adventure in an open-world, Peter Parker’s latest journey might be the perfect game. It’s a bit more linear and streamlined than Immortals Fenyx Rising, but it has a solid amount of comedy and thrilling combat moments that will feel familiar to anyone who recently finished the mythological adventure from Ubisoft.
9 Assassin’s Creed: Origins
Assassin’s Creed: Origins released in 2017 and was the first entry in Ubisoft’s new direction for the mega-popular franchise. It injected the game with role-playing game elements and departed from a lot of the stealth gameplay elements the series was known for.
Despite being divisive among fans, the game reviewed well, and the Egyptian based escapade providing a refreshing take on the Assassin’s Creed open-world formula, which can be seen in many aspects of Immortals Fenyx Rising.
8 No Man’s Sky
When games are innovative and ambitious, it’s often a gamble that results in genre-defining experiences or missteps. For Hello Games and their game No Man’s Sky, it was sadly the latter at launch. In the months and years that followed, they’ve turned No Man’s Sky into an open-space game that’s worth experiencing. Players who are self-motivated and enjoy emergent gameplay will find the most pleasure in this exploratory survival game that’s infused with much more of a narrative than is assumed.
7 Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla
In many ways Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla can be viewed as the adult or mature version of Immortals Fenyx Rising. Their settings and themes are different, but for better or worse most Ubisoft open-world games stick to a certain formula when it comes to world design and objectives. Though Valhalla has funny moments, it’s not the comedy that is the connecting tissue between the two. Players who are in the mood for more modern and timely Ubisoft adventures should look no further than another 2020 release from the company.
6 The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is likely the most polar opposite video game on this title when comparing it to Immortals Fenyx Rising. Not only is the setting and narrative more mature, but the gameplay itself isn’t as simple and welcoming as it is in Immortals Fenyx Rising. The Witcher 3 might be a game players put on a backlog list and come to later, but may not be best for a straight jump. If the monsters are what a player loved in Immortals Fenyx Rising, then it’s hard to deny The Witcher 3 considering monster hunting is the core of the game.
5 The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Internet memes are more powerful than people understand, and sadly The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim found out the hard way when it was released in 2011. In the years that have followed the meme culture of it being ported to multiple devices has overshadowed just how good of a game it is. It still sits at a review aggregate score of 94 on Metacritic. The melee combat isn’t ideal, but the magic and world exploration are fantastic and fans of fantasy role-playing games should have this on their list of games they must play before they die.
4 Horizon Zero Dawn
Horizon Zero Dawn has been lauded as one of the best games on the PS4, and Guerilla Games’ open-world adventure proved that sentiment in spades. The game has players control Aloy, a girl looking for answers in a land occupied by mechanical dinosaurs and beasts.
Future science fiction isn’t the same as the mythological fantasy of Immortals Fenyx Rising, but both settings allow players to explore and overcome adversity with danger looming around every corner. With a sequel coming in 2021, it’s also a perfect time to get caught up with Horizon Zero Dawn.
3 Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey
Open-world games in which players get to make their protagonist, or at the very least choose between options, often lend towards enjoyment since players feel a sense of ownership and uniqueness to their experience. Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey lets players choose between a male and female protagonist, much like in Immortals Fenyx Rising. The female character named Kassandra is considered by many to be the canon choice, but Ubisoft allows players to explore and understand the character they want.
2 Minecraft
Despite how successful and popular Minecraft is, it’s often forgotten that it’s an open-world game. The emphasis may be on crafting, building, and survival, but it provides players with a giant open-world to explore. Every year seems to bring a new update with numerous welcome additions for players. Families, kids, and explorers who just finished Immortals Fenyx Rising should definitely spend some time with Minecraft, but statistically speaking it’s hard to envision someone who’s played Immortals Fenyx Rising and yet has never played Minecraft.
1 The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Immortals Fenyx Rising has a fun open-world with a narrative that’s whimsically nonsensical and rendered with a unique cartoon-like art style that doesn’t take itself too seriously. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild shares all of those same qualities, with the one major difference being the difficulty scaling. The game isn’t overly hard, and it’s not like Nintendo isn’t going to make an accessible game for families and their children, but it’s good to keep in mind that going from Immortals Fenyx Rising to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild isn’t 100% seamless — though it’ll still feel pretty organic.
