Halo 3 is now available on PC as part of 343 Industrie’s porting of The Master Chief Collection to the platform. By all accounts, it’s a great PC port even compared to the other Halo PC releases this past year. It should be no surprise then that modders are already experimenting with altering Halo 3, either for fun or function. One such example is a new mod that turns Halo 3 from first-person into third person, replete with a high-quality Master Chief model.
Developed by modder parapara, the mod is straightforward in its use. It turns the Halo 3 story campaign into a third-person experience, no more and no less. It’s also usable in cooperative play, but all players will need to have the mod installed for it to work.
According to the developer, the third-person works by utilizing some functionality that already exists within Halo 3. The detached mounted turret in Halo 3 already pushes the perspective in Halo 3 into third-person. As such, it’s just a matter of retaining that third-person regardless of whether the player has a detached mounted turret in their hands or not.
That’s also why the Halo 3 mod’s developer doesn’t believe it would be as easy to accomplish in Halo: Combat Evolved or Halo 2. There’s simply no easy way to implement third-person without a major development effort. And so that’s why a third-person mod doesn’t exist for those games, as far as the modder knows.
Unfortunately, the Halo 3 third-person mod isn’t perfect yet. One mod user says that it’s currently impossible to zoom-in with weapons while using the third-person mod. In other words, since third-person is forced all the time players can’t aim down the sights or use scopes. This can hopefully be fixed, with the developer selectively turning off third-person when players try to zoom in. But if it is possible, it’ll likely take time.
What’s essential is that Halo 3 players now have the opportunity to play in third-person. It’s not just a fun feature, but also an accessibility option that will allow PC gamers who may otherwise have been unable to play Halo 3 to try the game out. It may even be something 343 Industries should consider officially supporting in Halo Infinite and future games.
Halo 3 is available now on PC, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
