The writer of Indiana Jones 5 confirms that he has now left the project. This is the second crew change confirmed for the movie in the last month as James Mangold signed on as director in May after Steven Spielberg stepped down.
Speaking to Collider, Jurassic Park and Spider-Man writer David Koepp confirmed he is no longer working on Indiana Jones 5, saying that this comes from Spielberg’s decision not to direct the movie. While Koepp said that Mangold “deserves a chance to take his shot at it,” the former Indiana Jones 5 writer also said that “when Steven left, it seemed like the right time to let Jim have his own take on it and have his own person or himself write it.”
Fans will be disappointed that Koepp, who also wrote the screenplay for the first Mission: Impossible movie, will not be working on Indiana Jones 5. Koepp’s work on action titles with sci-fi and supernatural elements made the screenplay writer a strong choice for the untitled Harrison Ford blockbuster. The writer chosen to take up the mantle will surely be qualified, but many will have wanted to see Koepp’s talents in the movie.
However, if there was a good time for the Indiana Jones 5 cast or crew to change, now would be it. Disney has just changed the Indiana Jones 5 release date, making it one of several movie release dates to be affected by COVID-19. With the movie delayed by a year, it will give the new writer more time to create a great story.
Indiana Jones 5 is currently scheduled for a July 29, 2022 opening.
