Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a game that needs constant fixes, which is expected of any consistent, online competitive game. Sometimes this takes the form of a 30GB patch, but more often it is smaller changes and quality of life fixes. The best changes are the ones that follow what players have been asking for consistently.

No matter what changes are implemented in a game like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, professional players have to keep track of all of them. Even a small change can have a big impact on the pro play scene if someone figures out how to exploit it properly. This means testing new features extensively and seeing what changes to weapons and equipment mean for actual gameplay.

A big aid to professional players when it comes to testing the game is private, custom matches, which allow players to tinker with the rules. In this way, players can create a game with just their friends to either study aspects of the match, practice under certain conditions, or just have fun. These closed matches are often used for competitive practice and sometimes lead to odd discoveries, like throwing knives being able to counter finisher moves. Players have been asking Infinity Ward for dedicated servers to handle these custom games for some time, as regular servers simply weren’t cutting it.

Infinity Ward finally relented recently and, after pros decried the state of the regular servers, offered dedicated server support for custom games. These servers quickly turned out to be buggy, with odd problems like hearing ongoing chat from a completely separate game. As a result, the dedicated server option was pulled almost immediately after its implementation. Players looking for a way to practice infinite sprints will have to make do with a quiet space in a public match.

There is currently no set date for when the dedicated server option will return and no timeline in place for its fix. While Infinity Ward recently laid out a list of future fixes, the dedicated server problems were discovered after that list came out. Hopefully the servers will be added on as an addendum and given priority to get them back to players as fast as possible.

However, given that it was several months after launch before players were heard and dedicated servers were implemented, it may be a long while before they come back. Hopefully, this will not be added to the list of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare memes as another strike against Activision or Infinity Ward.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is available for PC, PS4, and XboX One.
