A new Game Boy iPhone case lets you play games on your phone with a built-in display and operational controls. The case, which is listed at $18, can be purchased for $12 at DailySteals.com by applying the discount code CNETGCS at checkout.
The retro case, which features a fully functional console with a color display and tactile analog buttons, comes with its own battery that affords four hours of gaming between charges via micro-USB. The case also includes 36 pre-loaded classic arcade games, including Super Contra, Super Mario Bros, Tetris, Boom Man, Balloon Fight and Donkey Kong, among others. The case’s ultra-thin design also protects phones from falls and bumps.
Available in five different colors, the case comes in a variety of sizes to fit the iPhone 6, 7 or 8, iPhone 6 Plus, 7 Plus or 8 Plus, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone X or XS or iPhone XR. The case also offers full port access for buttons, microphone, speaker, headphone jack, dock, and flash, and a built-in speaker system. In order to use the case as a Game Boy, you just need to slide a small battery into the inside corner, snap it on and start playing.
The original Game Boy handheld game console was developed and manufactured by Nintendo in 1989, though production ended in 2003. The Game Boy and its successor, the Game Boy Color, have sold an estimated 118 million units worldwide. Praised for its exceptional battery life and its bundled games like Tetris and Super Mario Land, the Game Boy was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame in 2009.
Although Game Boy has been out of production for 17 years, some developers like Dana Puch have continued to release titles on the original handheld game console to keep “its spirit alive.” Puch’s Barcelona-based company Greenboy Games, which has developed games like Micro Doctor, Lunar Journey, Submarine 9 and Leo Legand is currently crowdfunding a new game, Where Is My Body?, on Kickstarter. Puch, whose goal was €4,000, has so far raised over €14,200.
