An Irish author was caught after accidentally adding a The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild reference in his historical fiction novel.

John Boyne is a bestselling author, probably known for his award-winning novel The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. His latest book, The Traveller At the Gates of Wisdom, was recently published in Ireland and the U.K. Though the book is a realistic historical fiction novel, some readers have found what appears to be some ingredients lifted directly from Breath of the Wild.

Reddit user u/NoNoNo_OhHoHo posted an image of a page of the book. At first glance, the text on the page appears normal, with nothing out of the ordinary. However, those who are familiar with Breath of the Wild’s dyeing recipes might notice something funny about the ingredients listed for each dye.

So how did this blunder happen? Is it just a clever reference or Easter Egg for Zelda fans?

Writer Dana Schwartz (@DanaSchwartzzz) tweeted about Boyne’s error in a detailed Twitter thread, where she speculated that the author may have Googled recipes for colored dye and not realized that he was sourcing his information from a video game guide. In her tweet, Schwartz demonstrates Googling “ingredients red dye clothes” and receiving a Breath of the Wild guide from Polygon as her first search result.

While this is certainly an embarrassing error, it seems like Boyne has a pretty good attitude about his mistake. In a reply to Schwartz, the Irish author owned up to his oversight, even adding a couple of laughing-face emojis and joking about how he sees himself telling this story “on stage for many years to come.”

In a follow-up tweet, Boyne admitted that while he couldn’t exactly remember if he Googled it, as Schwartz had hypothesized, he believed that her theory was highly probable. He also confirmed that he had no plans to edit the book, saying “I actually think it’s [the mistake] is quite funny”.

On his personal Twitter account, Boyne asked his followers to remind him to add a special acknowledgment to Breath of The Wild when The Traveller At the Gates of Wisdom’s next edition was published.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is available now, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
