For more than a year now, Borderlands fans have been wondering when Borderlands 3 is going to be released. Borderlands 2 is getting a VR version and this will give fans a new way to enjoy the cel-shaded shooter, but it’s not enough. Fans are champing at the bit for new content and would love to see Borderlands 3 being released.
Borderlands series developer Gearbox Software has yet to make an announcement about Borderlands 3, but fans believe that an announcement could be on the way soon. The speculation comes as a result of several bizarre tweets from Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford. Over the past few days, Pitchford has used the number 3 in several tweets and it has people speculating about Borderlands 3.
There are three “three-themed” tweets so far. On November 29, Pitchford noted that his to-do list has just “3 things on it” and he had 3 meetings scheduled before 3PM, adding “is the universe telling me something?” On November 30 (today as of the time of writing), Pitchford pointed out that November 29 was the 333rd day, saying that “People will lose their minds when the calendar flips to year 3000.” An hour after this, Pitchford cryptically posted that it “Feels like E3 all over again…”
If Pitchford is indeed teasing some sort of Borderlands 3 reveal then The Game Awards 2018, which takes place next week, is a likely announcement location. The Game Awards host Geoff Keighley has confirmed that there will be more than 10 game announcements during the event. Because of the hype surrounding the event, the teasers from Keighley and co., and Pitchford’s strange tweets, it has fans wondering if Borderlands 3 could be announced there.
The speculation is also being fueled by rumors that Borderlands 3 is being readied for a 2019 release. Although the rumors are just that - rumors - if the game is to be released next year, an announcement at The Game Awards would give Gearbox and 2K Games enough time to start promoting the game before launch.
But with all this said, fans could just be reading into things. There is always major speculation surrounding The Game Awards and its announcements and there’s always a lot of talk about Borderlands 3. The combination of the two has the rumor mill spinning especially. Pitchford’s tweets could just be a coincidence, though it’s not long until fans’ suspicions are either confirmed or denied.
