SPOILERS FOR MARVEL’S AVENGERS AHEAD!
The story mode of Marvel’s Avengers mostly exists to set up the multiplayer component of the game, but the post-credits scene seems to be building up to the arrival of a familiar villain from the MCU.
Marvel’s Avengers ends with Modok piloting a Kree Sentry, which is an ancient robot designed by the Kree Empire to watch over areas of particular importance. The Avengers must work together to defeat an army of AIM soldiers and take Modok down. In the final battle, Ms. Marvel transforms into a giant and impales the sentry on some debris. It’s like a Godzilla fight. It’s awesome.
The Post-Credits Scene
The ending of Marvel’s Avengers shows a new leader taking control of AIM, which sets up more multiplayer missions. There is also a post-credits sequence that shows some kind of pod or spaceship flying out of the ruined body of the Kree Sentry and into outer space.
The purpose of this mysterious pod isn’t explained in the game, but it seems fairly obvious what it’s leading to, or rather, who.
Who Is It Setting Up?
The pod scene is likely setting up Ronan the Accuser as a future villain, who you may recognize from the original Guardians of the Galaxy movie.
Ronan has often been linked to Kree Sentries in Marvel Comics. It’s possible that the pod exists as a warning mechanism, to let the Kree Empire know that there are people out there with the strength to destroy a Sentry, so they could be a potential threat in the future. This would lead to the Kree dispatching an armada to deal with the Avengers, with Ronan leading the vanguard.
The introduction of Ronan and the Kree serves two additional purposes: It’s an easy excuse to bring in heroes from the Guardians of the Galaxy as future playable characters; And using the Kree as villains would also give the developers the perfect excuse to introduce another army of practically identical foes for the Avengers to wail on besides robots.
Marvel’s Avengers is receiving a number of free content updates in the future, which will be linked to upcoming heroes, including Hawkeye, Kate Bishop, and Spider-Man. It’s possible that the Kree/Ronan will be used as part of a storyline involving a playable member from the Guardians of the Galaxy, such as Star-Lord or Gamora.
