There are several quality game releases this July, some already out, and some not out soon enough. One release to keep an eye on is Rocket Arena. A bit off the radar compared to something like Ghost of Tsushima, it’s worth a look for anyone interested in arena shooters.
Rocket Arena is the latest product from EA Originals, EA’s indie production project. Coming out in two days (July 14), it features 3v3 matches where every fighter uses a different rocket launcher variant. Think Team Fortress 2 if everyone played a different flavor of Soldier. The game has been reworked by its creators over several years, and is finally ready to launch.
First impressions of Rocket Arena’s beta have been good, with fun game modes and gameplay. According to the previews, the characters come across as a bit bland, but the flavors of rockets are interesting and fun. The beta has been free, which has allowed a lot of people to get a taste for the game, but people have been wondering if the game will stay free on release. The short answer is: no. The game will retail for $30, launching on the PC, PS4, and Xbox One. This is in addition to a season pass and microtransactions on cosmetics.
With the amount of content shown for the game so far, it is debatable whether or not the $30 price tag is warranted. The official reveal trailer for Rocket Arena has shown everything the game has to offer at this point. While the arenas and fighters look fun, beta players have stated it’s good mostly in short bursts. In a game like this, the novelty of the experience can be a big selling point, but can also wear off fast. It will definitely need continued support to warrant its retail price.
To be fair, it does look like further support is on the way in the immediate future. The Rocket Arena roadmap details plans for a new character, along with new maps and modes.
Another reason for the game to justify its price tag is that it’s not EA’s only project. Other games like Apex Legends and the upcoming Madden NFL 21 already have dedicated fanbases. EA has promised to address fan concerns of Madden, something rarely done, so who knows how much support the company will give to Rocket Arena. Hopefully the game turns out to be a real blast.
Rocket Arena launches on July 14 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
